40th Anniversary of the Bradford City Stadium Fire

Yesterday (11/05/25) marked the 40th anniversary of the Bradford City Stadium fire. It took just 270 seconds for the fire to claim the lives of 56 fans and injure another 260.

While we send our thoughts to the families, friends, and loved ones affected on 11 May 1985, it is a real reminder for operators to make health and safety their number one priority.

Remember to:

  • Keep all emergency exits free from obstructions and NEVER locked whilst the public on the premises
  • Remove unused combustible materials from the premises
  • Make good use of safety signage, ensuring it is readable, clean, and in good condition
  • Have a fire risk assessment conducted by a suitably competent and qualified person
  • Regularly review the fire risk assessment
  • Have a robust induction process that includes fire safety
  • Practically test the evacuation procedures.
